Polyester won’t get damaged or corroded easily if exposed to certain chemicals. It can handle substances and compounds that have a pH range of 1 to 14, making it far more resistant than other pipe materials out there. Also, it’s safe to know that polyester is actually approved by a lot of manufacturers and pipe relining organisations. However, polyester does have some issues that one should know. When relining with the use of polyester, you must be prepared for the chemical odours by its styrene chemical compound. Proper handling of polyester is of paramount importance to avoid exposure from its fumes. Also, polyester shrinks faster than epoxy, which is kind of troublesome in the long run.
Epoxy Resin Type
If polyester is popular with main line contractors, epoxy resin on the other hand is the number one choice for the majority of lateral lining contractors. Also, epoxy is mostly used in sewer pipe relining. This resin type is actually the most durable among the other two common resins. It’s also able to stick to the old pipes tightly, lowering its shrinkage in decades. A resin that has a low shrink rate means that you won’t have trouble with the pipe structure for many years to come. Epoxy has the ability to have a more efficient wastewater disposal because of its very smooth surface. A lot of contractors prefer epoxy since it doesn’t contain styrene or any other compounds that produces foul odours. There is one minor problem epoxy though, and that is its very long cure time. It takes a lot of time and patience to cure epoxy since it’s tougher than other resins and to tightly bond with the pipes. Strict compliance to the schedule is needed if the customer and contractors want to get the job done as fast they could.
Vinyl Ester Resin
Vinyl is a combination of both epoxy and polyester, offering a far more superior resistance to corrosion and chemicals. It has the ability to fend off substances that have pH range which is lesser than 1 up to 14. It can also rival most pipe materials in terms of durability and lifespan. Vinyl ester has the same problems and disadvantages of polyester resin.
