  • The Pros and Cons of Having Vitrified Clay Pipes as your Main Pipe Material

    First of all, vitrified clay pipes (VCP) materials are processed through vitrification. Vitrification is the process of exposing a material to immense heat in order to liquify it. After the material is transformed, it’s then cooled immediately to retain a solid and glass-like structure ―— making it more durable than its previous state. The materials in VCP are abundant such as clay, water, ceramics, and grog. These earthen textiles are mixed together and vitrified. Having a vitrified clay pipe has numerous advantages as well as disadvantages. Take a deeper look at the pros and cons of using vitrified clay pipes below:

    The Pros
    -It’s an extremely durable material

    There’s no question that most pipe materials used in the past and even today are very durable and have decent lifespans for a sewer pipe. However, there are some factors that affect other pipe materials. Majority of metallic pipe types like galvanised steel and cast iron usually have 80-100 years but realistically; it won’t reach the intended lifespan due to corrosion. The rusting can cut down the expected useful lifespan of these metal pipes. VCP on the other hand can reach up to 80 to 100 years since it won’t rust and is basically a durable material.

    -Able to resists corrosion

    Aging and decomposition in the pipeline will eventually cause pipes to be corroded ―— making them completely useless or defective when handling solid and liquid wastes from your house’s plumbing. It’s mainly the sulphuric acid from organic and inorganic in the pipeline that becomes the corrosive compound known as sulphuric acid. If you have a vitrified clay pipe, you won’t have to worry about any of these since it’s very resistant to corrosion.

    -Can be cleaned with a hydro jet frequently

    A common method of cleaning pipes used by plumbers is through a high water pressure of water jet machine. The strong psi (pressure per square inch) can effectively clean the pipes, but the problem is that if it’s constantly used in a pipeline; it will damage the lining structure of the pipe material. VCP is one of the few pipe materials that can be frequently cleaned with high pressure water jets due to its hydraulic strength and resistance to abrasion as well.


    Even though vitrified clay pipes are among the most resistant pipe materials in existence, it’s still prone to aging just like any other pipe material. One of the special pros of VCP is that the clay and ceramic materials can actually be recycled for other purposes after it has reached its maximum lifespan.


    Very prone to root attacks

    There is one major problem with VCP and that’s none other than being very prone to root attacks. In fact, it’s probably the most vulnerable from root intrusion among the other pipe sewer materials out there. The compositions of pipe materials are very porous which attracts roots easily. To prevent some root problems from your sewer pipes, you can just plant trees and shrubs that have roots that only require shallow soil.
